ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS: CONSTANCY AND CHANGE

As the decade began, although in severe pain and prior to major surgeries, I was engaged in developing a new sculpture series, Structures, combining unfinished outlyers about the studio with additional new components. As their inception parts are derived from several past probings, over long periods, some are completely abstract while others are fused with figurative elements, either raw or polished. These new works address similar issues as those of previous series, but with psychological starting points, indicated in their titles. Due to circumstances, many of the beginnings are as yet unfinished; a return to these works is imminent as recovery concludes.

In early recovery, with improved vision and mobility restoring, I embarked on a series of drawings, as a framework for large paintings: Passages began as small vertical drawings, in 4-3 proportion. These are being doubled in size as digital prints and worked over, in watercolour, with light colouration. The following, ongoing larger works, may be left as finished drawings only. Many are intended as studies for fairly large paintings of several feet in both directions.

The series deals with the passage of time (through multiple viewpoints, scale, transparency, and overlap), juxtapositions, the cycle of life, portals of opportunity, the cosmos, and the outlook of our home world. Its content is drawn from my career works - the drawings use excerpts (passages) from both two and three dimensional pieces, developed over decades.

Having withdrawn, retired, or resigned from all professional boards, jobs, and societies, travel demands have disappeared as time and opportunity have expanded. As well as developing the discussed series, I continue to restore or refashion past works, develop proposals for future endeavours, and manage the studios and grounds of Lot 7.

The Beacons constitute an ongoing body of work about markings in time, place, and thought. They can be experienced purely visually or probed intellectually for deeper symbolic meaning. Some stand as pillars of warning or caution, others as positive statements in celebration of life –this falls into the latter category and focuses positive attention on decision of possibilities and thrust of direction. Entasis, as conceived architecturally by the ancient Greeks, was amplified extensively allowing the portal penetration.

The newly conceived lower element counter-acts the lyrical fluidity of the upper, grounding it both physically and metaphorically while raising the overall height to thirteen feet. This form, fabricated in white marble, coupled with the bronze above will present a timeless and classically enduring marker.
