1990–1999
FROM SEARCH HOUSES TO MYTHIC CYCLES
As the decade commenced, a major installation was presented at Artefect Gallery in Toronto for THINGS FALL APART/THE CENTER CANNOT HOLD - an exhibition themed on ecology. Within the Environment Without/Without the Environment Within grew throughout the exhibition’s duration; grasses and small plants, nurtured in the studio prior to the show, were replanted into earth inserted into the Dome of Identity.
The first Seer Lodge, crafted as the 80s concluded, was quickly followed by others in this series and by the first of: Lunar Lodge, Anchoress Tower and Anchorite Tower.
All the Lodges and Towers would have, in common, an isolated whole or fragmented figure held within an environmental structure metaphorically attesting to its intention whether of outlook and search, withdrawal and protection, or fertility and awareness.
With the major works came a plethora of studies of Towers, Anchorites/Anchoress, Fossilizations, and the first outpouring of Torso Shells and Lunar Figures.
The Guardian and the Portal/Pathway works also continued and expanded. In 1995, major works from all series, along with selected studies, were presented in a massive, solo, invitational exhibition, at the SSC Gallery at the Exchange Tower in downtown Toronto. With this exhibition came an offer to join the Sculptors Society of Canada - this organization has become another major factor in the overall sculptural practice.
In 1997, at the Zinc Gallery (across the road from the AGO), an exhibition of major works and studies from the Lunar Lodge series was presented. The same year, these works along with new pieces from the Gazer, Portal, and Tower series were shown at the Canadian Sculpture Centre.
Fusion Figures and Headworks (both series from life models) had also proliferated in this decade and many had become parts of Portal/Pathway and Split Gazer works. As well, mythic and animalistic distortion became more pronounced.
